8 Reasons Why Como Is Right For You

Italy has been voted by Tripadvisor’s Travellers Choice Awards 2012 as the most popular destination when it appeared 7 times in the top 25 European destinations to visit.

We asked our previous guests why they chose Italy & Lake Como………

Food – Italy is famed for its cuisine; the pasta, truffles, chocolates, meats and cheeses. The lake specialises in a lovely meaty white fish – Pesce di Lago and is simply delicious.

Weather – the lake comes alive in the summer months with boat trips on the lake, water sports galore or hire a speed boat for the day. There are plenty of lidos on the lake including Lido di Cadenabbia just a short walk from Villa Lucia. In the colder months the lake becomes a winter wonderland with wonderful hikes, skiing resorts not to far away and Christmas shopping is a favourite in both Como and nearby Milan.

Wine – whether you know your Barolo from your Valpolicella or your Asti from your Prosecco, you can sample them all in Italy. See our Wine & Stay package where you can enjoy a wine tasting afternoon on Como.

Golf – our guests love the short drive to the nearby golf course said to be one of Europe’s historic and challenging courses. We offer a Golf & Stay package for those who want to enjoy their time on the lake and take advantage of our partnership with the Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Course.

History – Italy was once the centre of civilisation and its ancient temples, curches and museums illustrate its history for all visitors to enjoy. Our favourites include Villa Carlotta & its botanical gardens are just a short walk from Villa Lucia, Villa Melzi can be seen across the waters and the Cathedral in Como itself is incredibly beautiful. Our Explore & Stay package is for all those who wish to see all the lake has to offer, we have organised various guided tours and excursions for you to enjoy.

Flights from the UK – fly from many UK airports to Malpensa or Linate airport in Milan. With Easyjet flying into Milan on a daily basis means you can visit Como for less than a train ticket to London!

Time – it takes just over 90minutes to travel from the UK to Milan, meaning you enjoy breakfast in blighty and lunch on the lake!

Strong pound vs the Euro – it has slowly increased over the past few years and is now offering all those travelling to Italy more value for money.

Big Events for Lake Como

I was the envy of all my friends last week, when I found myself sharing a restaurant with the delightful George Clooney in the lakeside town of Laglio, Lake Como. Apparently George likes to lie low and enjoy the lake on his private boat and the lake roads on his Harley Davidson, so was much surprised to be sharing my primi piatti with him!

But Lake Como isn’t just for the rich, famous and Clooney fans……..

A stormy start for our wedding couple at The Lucia Estate

A stormy start for our wedding couple at The Lucia Estate

It was just five months ago that our lovely couple first enquired about celebrating their marriage at The Lucia Estate. The planning was smooth, all went simply wonderful on the day and the wedding party fell in love with Villa Luca and her fabulous roof terrace. But, it was the weather that gave us our biggest challenge with storms, showers and brilliant sunshine throughout the day.

As the estate itself offers both an outdoor and indoor option for a ceremony and celebrations, it meant that their day still went without a hitch.

Skipping the showers, the couple, their friends and family walked back from their ceremony to the villa where their photographer spent some time exploring the gardens.

Exploring The Gardens

Heading onto the roof terrace, the views across the lake are simply breath-taking and a real photo opportunity.Across the lake looking towards the Alps

Dining in the fantastic Lucia Hall with large double doors overlooking the lake and its pretty mural on the ceiling, the delicate flowers and string quartet worked to create a truly magical celebration.

Strike the band inside the VIlla itself

As the sun sets, the lake becomes a pretty hue of blues and pale pinks whilst the lights begin to light up the lake shore. An evening celebration in the garden sees moonlight dancing in hot pink silk!

Lucia Estate

We wish them a wonderful life together and hope to see them again soon at The Lucia Estate.

If you wish to celebrate at The Lucia Estate, we are now taking bookings for 2013 at current 2012 rates*

Italy with its calendar bursting with festivals and religious holidays, makes Lake Como a great destination to experience Settimana Santa (Easter Week). This year Easter takes place on 8th & 9th April 2012. The most religious and celebrated event in the year is marked by some of the most marvellous and memorable processions. This period becomes rather busy on the lake, so book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

The oldest historic festival on the Lake, the Sagra de San Giovanni, takes place on June 24th this year and is a true must-see! A weekend long festival of folk, art and old world charms, its main attraction comes after sundown when hundreds of floating lamps are cast onto the lake, and this is accompanied by a series of fireworks. This festival of lights illuminates the lake and makes for a spectacular sight that continues into the early hours of the morning. The locals continue the celebration with an early morning parade of decorated boats, followed by a full day of folk dancing, traditional music and plenty of tasty food.

George Entertains At Como – And Pizza!

George entertains in his Como Villa again. The bit that caught my eye was the Pizza oven.

FIrstly..Why? Como has some of the very best restaurants you can find anywhere in Italy?

Secondly. Erm, I fancy a pizza now.

Here’s the story from entertainment weekly

It’s a fantasy of countless women: Waking up in George Clooney’s Italian villa on Lake Como.
But for The Help star Viola Davis, that dream was a reality. Only minus George, that is.
"I begged him to let me stay at his villa in Lake Como for my honeymoon," Davis, 46 – who married Julius Tennon in 2003 – tells Entertainment Weekly of her good friend and likely fellow Oscar contender.

Viola Vists Como Villa SANS Mr Clooney
"I wasn’t there," adds the actor, 50. "That was her request!"
But Davis and her new husband didn’t seem to miss him.

"We were the only ones in the villa," she says. "It’s a 22-room villa!" With plenty of luxurious extras to boot – when asked if she used Clooney’s pizza oven, Davis joked: "I didn’t make the pizza. His staff made the pizza.

And while he wasn’t physically present, Clooney was only too happy to play host.
"I had just bought the place and she was getting married, which I tried to talk her out of," he tells the magazine with a laugh. "But that didn’t work out."

Villa Lucia Hosts “Bond Theme” Wedding

September 10th 2011 saw Villa Lucia host a Bond-tastic wedding celebration for two very special people and their 30 guests who had made the journey all the way from the rugged lands of Scotland.

Daniel Craig and Sean Connery were unfortunately otherwise engaged that very warm and sunny day, however it truly was a Thunderball of a day…….

The setting for Casino Royale and many other Hollywood blockbusters, Lake Como is the glamour hub of Italy.

Paul and Gemma first discovered Villa Lucia over 12 months ago and saw immediately just how perfect a setting it would be for their very intimate and personal wedding they had planned.

303876_276486595705016_170932522927091_955612_1726636722_n 300880_276486255705050_170932522927091_955601_820241116_n

When the sun rose over the mountains on Saturday 10th September, Villa Lucia was already buzzing with excitement. Gemma and her attendants were in the throes of hair and makeup…… the men of the party, well they were sleeping off the night before!

When the groom and his attendants appeared a little later on, even James Bond would have struggled to look as suave and sophisticated. Tartan kilts and silk cravats wafted into Lucia Hall where the photographer immediately took the opportunity to capture the moment.

All guests were welcomed through the beautiful ornate gates of the estate and into the gardens that brimming with flowers and excitement.

The harpist played as the bride and her father appeared at the top of the staircase and glided slowly down to the waiting groom.

And then a surprise for the guests……. the sound of bagpipes and a Scottish piper appeared!

Walking down along the lakeside, the couple hopped into their very own Bond speedboat, whilst the guests took a much slower paced boat and were shown the sights of Lake Como.

When the party arrived back at Lucia, the sun had set and it was a light only by candlelight. The cake was cut and the first dance struck up to what could only be one perfect song…… “nobody does it better”.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

This album is just a sneaky peek at the photos we managed to take during the day. Enjoy…..
